  1. I’m not aware of any nations, past or present, who don’t have things in their history they’d like to take back. Would it make a difference if we declared ourselves to be an atheist nation? That didn’t work too well for the Soviet Union.

    1. This seems to have hit a nerve for you. Dr. Cone was good at that. The fact of the matter is that our national narrative claims to be Christian, with an ethic of love center stage. Cone calling slavery and genocide in that context “ironic” seems pretty irenic to me. I’m not sure the “everyone else has done it” ethic is helpful. My mom sure never let me get away with it. As Jim Wallis and many, many others point out, our nation is built on a foundation of the genocide of one race and the enslavement of another.
