Sermon for the Festival of the Reign of Christ – Matthew 25:31-46
On the surface, the story of the sheep and the goats in the 25th chapter of Matthew seems like a dramatic, yet simple way of telling us how to win favor with the King, Jesus. With a little honesty, however, we soon realize it is impossible to live up to the ethic of always serving “the least of these” who hunger, thirst, and suffer. It is also disturbing to learn that we are not always so good at even knowing Jesus when he shows up among us. If we can’t recognize the king, how are we to live in the kingdom?
